An Ancestral Training Approach

At FPL we help you enhance your entire fitness spectrum by training in relation to how our bodies are naturally built.Β

As human beings, our entire musculoskeletal system is resembled in a very purposeful manner based upon the functions it needed to fulfil to evolve as a specie. For humans, 4 primary functions drove our biological adaptations: Standing on 2 legs. Walking, Running, Throwing.Β

As a result we function as a fully integrated system where All our muscles (and overlying fascia) purposefully interconnect connect with one another to facilitate these fundamental functions.

Unlike traditional forms of training which are highly oriented around 1 dimensional, isolated movements which promote wear and tear on our body, we train in relation to our irrefutable biological characteristics so that we can attain our desired fitness results while simultaneously enhancing our overall vitality and longevity in the process.

We are our best when our bodies can function within their natural design. Whether you are a competitive athlete or just trying to get out of pain, our training can help you achieve your fitness goals.

Our training sessions follow the general framework outlined below, while catering to the individual needs of each client.

Step 1. Myofascial Release

Over time, excessive sitting and a sedentary lifestyle create restrictions within our tissues which limit our range of motion and lead to compensations and lead to a cycle of dysfunction.Β
Β
We start off by taking you through myofascial release techniques to loosen up restricted tissues, making them more malleable and receptive to realignment techniques, corrective exercise, and dynamic movement.

Step 2. Integrated Corrective Exercise

We use corrective exercises to rewire old, imbalanced movement patterns and replace them with more efficient patterns that are oriented around the 4 primary human movements (standing, walking, running and throwing).Β

Using various techniques such as joint stacking, active spinal decompression, diaphragmatic breathing, and re-tensioning, the objective is to create a connected body with a stable foundation that can handle heavy loads and multi plane movement.

Step 3. Strength & Performance OptimizationΒ

Once we have created a strong foundation, we use dynamic, integrated motions to train the body how to come in and out of a neutral posture and maintain a stable centre of gravity while moving through different planes of motion.Β

By loading entire myo fascial chains, we fully optimise force production within the body and therefore enhance our strength, speed and power in ways that are sustainable and directly relatable to athletics and basic human movement such as running, walking, and throwing.

About us:Β

Functional Performance Lab was founded in 2018 by Javier Velasco after sustaining a multitude of mild-severe injuries as a result of inadequate and outdated training techniques and not being able to address them through traditional rehabilitation protocols.

Taking his recovery into his own hands and searching alternative, more holistic alternatives, he came across a training system called Functional Patterns which completely transformed his body.Β
Not only was he able to solve all his injuries, but became significantly stronger, faster, more agile and experienced a new level of vitally and wellbeing he never thought possible.Β

Astonished by his results and seeing a big need for this type of training in Cape Town, he decided to immerse himself into the system, become a certified Functional Patterns human biomechanics specialist, and since then he has been helping others address their dysfunctions and enhance their performance.Β

Fpl is now team of passionate individuals with the common mission of changing the way people approach fitness.
